Terry: Students deserve better

Dear Editor,

As previously said, I support changing the structure of the Jersey City Board of Education due to the educational system being seen as a national embarrassment.

The Jersey City Board of Education is seen as a national embarrassment due to:

– 5 board members resigning midterm

– 1 board member overseas for the yr

– 1 board member indicted

– 1 board member saying public anti Semitic comments

– 1 board member w/ethics charges

– huge budget gap

Recently on Wednesday, January 8th, city council members voted to give the people of Jersey City the power to choose do they want to elect or appoint school board members moving forward. Democracy is truly giving power to the people. While some people may disagree, let the voters decide on a referendum.

Lastly, it’s important to understand the city council did not take away voter rights. This upcoming November there will be a referendum on the ballot and it’s up to the voters to decide.

Special thanks to Council President Pastor Joyce Watterman, Ward A Councilwoman Denise Ridley, Ward B Councilwoman Mira Prinz-Arey, Ward D Councilman Michael Yun, Ward E Councilman James Solomon, Ward F Councilwoman Jermaine Robinson, and Councilman Daniel Rivera.

Best,

Demetrius M. Terry
