Testa: Axe-Swinging Governor Will Do More Harm Than Good

Statewide Approach to COVID is Reckless and Unnecessary

Senator Michael Testa chastised Governor Phil Murphy for his statewide approach to New Jersey’s growing number of coronavirus cases.

“Governor Murphy has said he planned to use a surgical approach. In surgery you use a scalpel, not an axe,” said Testa. “Cape May and Cumberland counties in my district continue to report low numbers of cases, but Murphy is once again relying on a one-size-fits all approach that is a destructive over-reaction. He needs to put down the axe before he does any more damage.”

Murphy on Monday announced new COVID restrictions, including a mandatory 10 p.m. closing time indoor service at restaurants and bars, and prohibiting some indoor youth sports activities.

“This is one more reason why the Legislature should be part of these decisions,” said Testa. “We have advocated for a regional approach for months. Murphy should be targeting areas of high virus spread, and taking the time to evaluate the data and facts. There is no reason to lock things down gratuitously in South Jersey.”

Testa sponsors legislation limiting to 14 days effective period of certain emergency orders, rules, or regulations issued by the Governor.

“Elected legislators representing every area of the state should have a role in reviewing executive orders that last longer than two weeks,” said Testa. “That is, after all, the job they were elected to do.”
