The Civil Service Commission launches Clerical Apprenticeship Program to enhance civil service workers’ professional and technical skills

18 workers from nine agencies to participate in the 15-week program

Trenton, NJ – The Civil Service Commission will launch the New Jersey State Clerical Apprenticeship Program for Excellence (CAPE) on Thursday, February 13, 2020.

CAPE is designed to reinforce the professional and technical skills of entry-level employees within the clerical occupational group. CAPE curriculum focuses on three critical components: Communication and Organizational Skills, Office Technology and Computations, and Professional and Interpersonal Management.

Program Objectives are to:
1. Improve employees’ professional marketability by developing a range of essential clerical skills.
2. Explore knowledge areas in support of enhanced skills and career advancement.
3. Introduce and reinforce knowledge and skills in key clerical areas.
4. Enhance the skillset of New Jersey clerical workforce.
5. Afford New Jersey government departments and agencies opportunities to meet or exceed their employee development and training goals.

This 15-week program will host (18) participants from the Housing Mortgage and Finance Agency, Department of Children and Families, Department of Human Services, Civil Service Commission, Department of Corrections, Department of Education, Department of Health, Department of Military and Veterans Affairs, and the Board of Public Utilities.

Classroom instruction will supplement participants’ on-the-job training experiences at their respective government workplaces to ensure the fundamental clerical skills necessary for future advancement.

The Civil Service Commission plays a major role in the recruitment, testing, selection, and retention of civil service employees. The Commission recognizes that Clerical employees play an invaluable role in organizations and should be afforded the opportunity to develop professionally. CAPE will support these civil service employees on the state, county, and local levels by enhancing their professional and technical skills in the profession.
