The Dominican American Elected and Appointed Officials Caucus of NJ, DAEOC-NJ Supports Senator Nellie Pou for United States Congress in the 9th District

Trenton, NJ — After the passing of our beloved champion and dear friend, the late Congressman Bill Pascrell, who served with distinction and honor and will be missed dearly, the County Democratic Chairs and their Committee members of Congressional District 9 face the difficult task of quickly selecting his replacement. In light of this, the DAEOC-NJ overwhelmingly supports the selection of Senator Nellie Pou as the nominee for Congressman Pascrell’s seat.

“Senator Pou has a distinguished record of public service, shattering the glass ceiling throughout her exemplary career in public service. The first woman and the first Latina elected to represent the 35th Legislative District, Senator Pou in both the Assembly and currently in the Senate has made her mark, currently serving as Chair of the Senate Commerce Committee, Chairwoman of the NJ Legislative Latino Caucus and has received national recognition as Immediate Past President to the National Hispanic Caucus of State Legislators,” said Manny Segura, Chair of the DAEOC-NJ and former Councilman at Large of the City of Trenton. “Pou is a consensus builder, a person of vision and committed to all of her constituents, and as a Caucus we lift our voices in support of her selection.”

Reynaldo Martinez, Vice Chair of the DAEOC-NJ and former Councilman of the Borough of Haledon added, “we believe the selection by the County Chairs of Passaic, Bergen, and Hudson Counties is both wise and fair and, we fully support Senator Pou as the nominee to replace Congressman Pascrell on the ballot this November. Her selection as the first Latina member in Congress for New Jersey is a historic one, and one which we, as an elected and appointed officials’ organization representing large constituencies throughout the State of NJ support with enthusiasm and pride.”

The Dominican American Elected and Appointed Officials Caucus of NJ is composed of over 100 elected officials in government and commissions, representing a diversified constituency throughout the State. Its mission is to improve opportunities and open doors for Hispanic Americans in New Jersey’s political landscape, with a commitment to improving and protecting the lives of those they represent.
