Somerville, NJ – Today, the female majority of the Somerset County Commissioner Board, Commissioner Director Shanel Robinson, Commissioner Deputy Director Sara Sooy, and Commissioner Melonie Marano, released the following statement on the second anniversary of Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization:

“Two years ago yesterday, the Supreme Court threw Roe v. Wade under the bus with the Dobbs decision. A law of the land, defined in most school textbooks as fundamental, was thrown out in an instant—as a result, in the time since then, 21 states have passed abortion bans inserting government between women, their bodies, and their doctors and faith leaders.

“Thankfully, New Jersey is not one of those states, but with the threat of Donald Trump and Republicans’ potential for taking both the House and Senate, the threat to our reproductive freedoms continues. We need Democratic leadership up and down the ballot to fight against any attempt at a federal abortion ban.”

“The data has been clear for decades: access to abortion reduces maternal mortality and teen pregnancy, and when paired with access to contraception and family planning, ensures that women are also better off socially and financially. We will never stop working with state, federal, and local legislators to make sure that these rights are never denied to Somerset County residents, and that those political entities dedicated to the erosion of women’s rights are never successful.”
