Tom Malinowski Responds to Leaked SCOTUS Opinion Overturning Roe v. Wade

(Basking Ridge, NJ) Tom Malinowski is responding to the leaked U.S. Supreme Court draft opinion, which as it stands, overturns the 50-year precedent granting a woman’s right to a safe, legal abortion.

“If the Supreme Court overturns Roe v. Wade, Congress must codify its protections into law. And I believe that the American people will elect a Congressional majority dedicated to doing so.

Overturning Roe would take us back to a time when the government denied women the right to make their health care decisions —  a time when many women risked their lives to get black market abortions. This is already beginning to happen in states that have passed abortion bans, some of which include bounty laws that empower even rapists to sue their victims who seek to terminate a pregnancy. In 26 other states, draconian restrictions on a woman’s right to choose will automatically snap back into place if Roe v. Wade is overturned.

Americans are tired of conflict and division and of having our lives upended. The last thing we need right now is for a radical Supreme Court to suddenly rip up 50 years of settled law that the overwhelming majority of Americans believe should remain in place.

In January, New Jersey codified Roe v. Wade, which guarantees a woman’s right to a safe, legal abortion. But even our law would be eviscerated if a Republican Congress were to pass a nationwide abortion ban, which national Republicans have pledged to do if they regain a majority.

My likely opponent, Tom Kean Jr., voted against New Jersey’s law, and repeatedly voted to defund family planning services. He has shown time and again that he does not trust women to make their own personal healthcare decisions.

The stakes this November cannot be higher. I support a woman’s right to choose. Kean Jr. has consistently opposed it. His election would virtually guarantee a House majority that would impose a nationwide abortion ban. The voters of the 7th district can and will prevent that this November.”
