Turner Bill to Establish Trenton Capital City Aid Program Signed into Law

Trenton – Legislation sponsored by Senator Shirley K. Turner that would establish the Trenton Capital City Aid Program was signed into law by Governor Phil Murphy today.

“Trenton is our State’s capital, and it is a city with immense potential. The city is steeped in history, with stories that reach back to the colonial times and the founding of this Nation,” said Senator Turner (D-Hunterdon/Mercer). “This funding will go a long way towards revitalizing this incredible city, a forgotten and neglected jewel of not only this state, but this country.”

The new law would establish the Trenton Capital City Aid Program and direct the State to annually appropriate at least $10 million for each State fiscal year. The law would also appropriate $10 million from the Property Tax Relief Fund to the Department of Community Affairs to fund the reinstatement of the program in the 2019 fiscal year.

This law would provide property tax relief to the residents of the city and begin to fill the budgetary gap caused by the loss of a significant amount of State aid in recent fiscal years.
