Turner, Cruz-Perez Bill to Curb Illegal ATV Use Signed into Law

Trenton – Legislation sponsored by Senator Shirley Turner and Senator Nilsa Cruz-Perez, intended to curb illegal all-terrain vehicle use, was signed into law on Tuesday.

“Especially in our urban centers, the illegal operation of ATVs and dirt bikes on public roads creates a serious hazard for drivers and pedestrians,” said Senator Turner (D-Hunterdon/Mercer). “In recent years we have seen a troubling increase in ATV related deaths across the country, as the vehicles have become more popular. It is my hope that this legislation will reduce future accidents by encouraging young people to operate these vehicles safely and within the parameters of the law.”

The law establishes two new penalties and enhances existing penalties for illegally operating snowmobiles, all-terrain vehicles or dirt bikes. The two new penalties concern the operation of these vehicles on public streets, highways and rights-of-ways in violation of state traffic laws and regulations.

“The persisting presence of ATVs and dirt bikes illegally flying down our roads and through our neighborhoods are hazards plaguing communities across the state,” said Senator Cruz-Perez (D-Camden/Gloucester).  “They put the public’s safety at risk and have even resulted in fatalities. I am proud to see New Jersey taking a serious approach on an issue that affects the daily lives of so many.”

Current law requires snowmobiles, ATVs and dirt bikes to be registered annually if they are to be operated on public land or roadways.
