Turner Joins Mercer County Prosecutor for Broad Back to School Event

TRENTON – In an open event for school-aged children across Mercer County preparing to go back to school, Senator Shirley Turner is teaming up with the Prosecutor’s office to give out books, reusable masks, backpacks and other school supplies.

“Although most of our students will be learning from home as the school year begins, having the basic school supplies will ensure they are well-prepared for learning and help to get our students motivated,” said Senator Turner.

Senator Turner is also taking this opportunity to distribute the children’s books she collected for her annual book fair that had to be canceled due to school closings. The books were generously donated by area churches and schools to help promote literacy in the inner-city where 76% of third graders are reading below grade levels. Additionally, Trenton has closed four libraries, which limits children’s access to books.

“I am deeply concerned about how remote learning, the tech-gap, the lack of structure and opportunities to socialize will affect our children’s education,” said Senator Turner. “Our students need the support of our community now more than ever, and I am grateful that our ‘village’ is coming together to promote learning and help our children succeed.”

The Back to School Event will be held from 9:00 am to noon, tomorrow, August 29th, in Trenton Thunder’s Arm and Hammer Outfield Parking Lot.

Apart from Senator Turner and the Mercer County Prosecutor’s Office, other sponsors of the event include: Sheriff Jack Kemler, Capital Health, Capital City Community Coalition and the Trenton Thunder.

If it is raining, the event will be rescheduled for Sunday, August 30th at the same time and place.
