Statement on New Jersey’s IRS SALT Lawsuit — Fight He Has Lead Since January 2018
“Attorney General Grewal’s lawsuit today was exactly the right action to fight back against a regulatory overreach by the IRS that is, once again, raising taxes on New Jersey residents and other Blue States — and giving big tax breaks, yet again, to Red States.
After gutting the State and Local Tax deduction (SALT) in the Tax Hike Bill, the IRS is now preventing New Jersey towns and taxpayers from utilizing the charitable tax deduction, a deduction that residents in thirty-three other states have been taking for decades now. It wasn’t enough that the Red States tossed a bomb at New Jersey, the Treasury Secretary had to go further and rewrite the tax code to favor Moocher States even more.
We need to cut taxes and take advantage of every opportunity to provide relief to New Jersey tax payers. That’s why I’ve been focused on the charitable deduction and other tax cuts for years now. My first announcement on the charitable deduction was on January 5, 2018, in Fair Lawn, NJ, with then-Governor-elect Phil Murphy. New Jersey’s Tax Cut Plan was then signed into law on May 4, 2018. Last month, I introduced a resolution in Congress to prevent the IRS from enacting its capricious rule against our state and did so again yesterday. This is a welcome fight from our Attorney General and I’m glad that New Jersey is on the front lines against the Moocher States.”
