Uber Creates In-App Feature For Riders to Donate to Support Humanitarian Efforts in Ukraine
Company will match donations up to $1 million and plans to donate $500,000 to Red Cross and U.N. World Food Program
NEW JERSEY — Uber is actively working with various organizations to establish and support relief efforts in Ukraine, and today announced that the company is launching an in-app button for users to donate to the International Rescue Committee and will match donations made up to $1 million. Uber is also making an additional $500,000 donation to the International Federation of Red Cross and UN World Food Program to support humanitarian efforts in Ukraine and neighboring countries.
“We’re stepping up our response to the horrific war and humanitarian crisis in Ukraine with free rides at the Polish border, transporting food and essential goods, funding humanitarian aid, and launching in-app donations so Uber users can support relief efforts,” said Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi.
Since the horrific war in Ukraine began, it has rapidly become a tragic humanitarian crisis impacting millions of innocent people. Uber’s primary focus has been on ensuring its employees, riders, and drivers are safe, and remains committed to keeping cities moving and helping people travel during these difficult times.
Uber has collected 60 tons of essential supplies in Romania and is working with the International Red Cross to transport them to communities in Ukraine. In addition, they are providing unlimited free trips between the Ukrainian border and Polish cities to support refugees and their families, as well as free transportation for staff at Migrant Welcome Centers and for the delivery of goods to NGO warehouses in Poland.
Shortly after the attacks began, Uber paused operations throughout Ukraine to protect the safety of drivers and riders, and began helping staff and their families relocate to other countries or to areas of Ukraine not currently in danger of the conflict. They provided advance payments to all drivers in Ukraine and are exploring how Ukrainian refugees can have access to work on the Uber platform in neighboring countries.
Uber is actively assessing how to restore services to Ukraine on a city-by-city basis, as soon as it is safe. As the situation continues to escalate, Uber joins the international community’s response to take further actions to support Ukraine, ensuring their efforts have a direct and meaningful impact for those most in need of help.
