NEWARK – The Labor Union, the Laundry, Distribution & Food Service Joint Board (“the Joint Board”), Workers United/SEIU – which represents thousands of essential service workers in New Jersey, including more than 2,000 who live and work in the City of Newark – is proud to announce its support for Newark Mayor Ras Baraka in his re-election bid.
The Joint Board represents private sector employees in Newark in warehousing, childcare, and industrial laundries, as well as publicly employed municipal, housing authority and school board employees in affiliated locals Local 617 and Local 3.
“Mayor Baraka has been an effective leader during the toughest of times and deserves a third term,” said Megan Chambers, Co-Manager of the Joint Board.
“Our members who live and work in the city respect Mayor Baraka’s record. We look forward to working with his administration toward shared goals,” said Alberto Arroyo, Co-Manager of the Joint Board.
“Our members are the backbone of this City, at work and at home,” said Lorenzo Hall, President of Local 617, which is affiliated with the Joint Board and includes municipal employees at the Department of Public Works, Water & Sewer, the 911 Call Center, and Newark Housing Authority, as well as School Crossing Guards and blue-collar employees at Newark Board of Education. “Mayor Baraka has invested in city services and in public education; those are the right priorities for Newark,” said Hall.
Baraka is seeking a third four-year term in the election on May 10.
