United Community Corp. accepting enrollment for free Spring Break Camp

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

NEWARK — United Community Corporation is currently accepting enrollment for its Spring Break Camp, which will take place from Monday, April 5 – Friday, April 9. The week-long camp coincides with the spring break of Newark Public Schools. It will begin each day at 8:30 a.m. and conclude at 6 p.m.

The Spring Break Camp is funded by 21st Century and is limited to students in grades three through eight from Hawthorne Avenue, South 17th Street and Harriet Tubman elementary schools. The free camp will provide all students with breakfast, lunch and dinner courtesy of Newark Public Schools as well as bountiful activities – including basketball relay races, STEAM classes, kickball, computer activities and art classes.

Anyone interested in registering their child for the Spring Break Camp should contact UCC at 973-642-0181, EXT 3166 or by emailing Yucleidis.melendez@uccnewark.org or jamila.colin@uccnewark.org

“It is really important to have this,” UCC Director of Youth, Family & Senior Services Yucleidis Melendez said. “Kids have been at home doing virtual learning for an entire year now. They want to have fun, get out of the house and interact with other children. Parents don’t have to worry about paying for a babysitter and can go to work knowing that their kids are enjoying a week off from school in a safe location at West Side Park.”

West Side Park has been the location for monthly food and other essential product distributions for families. It most recently held a Spring Cleaning Distribution, which provided over 700 people with free food and cleaning supplies. Thus far in 2021, UCC’s monthly West Side Park distributions have served over 2,000 people.

“What we’ve been doing outside of our after school programs makes people want to be involved with all of UCC’s programs,” Melendez said. “They see that our agency strives to help fill as many of their needs as possible.”

In addition to accepting enrollment for its Spring Break Camp, UCC will also begin accepting enrollment for its Summer Camp program on April 15. The summer program will not be limited to the aforementioned three elementary schools and are open to all Newark Public Schools students in grades three through eight.
