Vas Challenges Caba to Debate Dramatic Crime and Rent Increases In Perth Amboy
Perth Amboy, N.J. (March11, 2024) – Today, Joseph B. Vas, Democrat for Mayor, forwarded a letter to Mayor Helmin Caba urging that he agree to participate in a debate. Among the important issues he outlined, which the residents and voters of Perth Amboy, are requesting clarification and transparency is the conflicting information released in Caba’s re-election announcement asserting “a consistent decline in crime rate” contrary to data provided by the Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI).
“The most important responsibility of government is to protect the health and safety of its residents. Providing inaccurate and misleading information gives residents a false sense of safety only exposing them to greater risks, stated Joseph B. Vas, Esq., Democratic candidate for Mayor.
Furthermore, it is unclear why after the recent amendment to the City’s Rent Control ordinance in 2022 which limited rent increases to 3% per year, something Vas strongly advocated and urged the Council to approve, that rents have the surged in the past two years in Perth Amboy.
Apartments.com and Zumper.Rent report rents have increased in Perth Amboy 10.53% last year, 9% just last month alone, and 15% over the past year as reported in a recent news article. “The need for transparency is even more necessary, as a result of your decision, Perth Amboy will participate in a first ever partisan election and State and National campaigns may drown out these concerns specific to our community. It is in our mutual interest that a clear understanding of these concerns and facts are established in order to discern truth from rhetoric and reality from fiction, wrote Joseph B. Vas, Esq., MBA.
