[Trenton, NJ, 1/9/2024] – Vote16USA, the leading organization dedicated to advancing the cause of lowering the voting age to 16 in local elections, expresses its profound gratitude to Governor Phil Murphy for his unwavering commitment to promoting youth engagement in our democratic process. Governor Murphy’s recent remarks in support of extending voting rights to 16-year-olds mark a significant milestone in the ongoing movement to empower young people and strengthen our democracy.

Since its inception in 2015, Vote16USA has been at the forefront of advocating for the enfranchisement of 16 and 17-year-olds in local elections across the United States. Governor Murphy’s endorsement of this bold idea underscores the increasing momentum and mainstream recognition this movement has gained in recent years.

The initiative to lower the voting age to 16 is rooted in the belief that establishing the habit of voting at a
younger age is crucial for the long-term health of our democracy. Voting is a civic duty and a fundamental right, and beginning this practice at 16 allows young people to become active, engaged citizens from the outset of their adult lives.

In Maryland, seven cities already allow 16- and 17-year-olds to participate in local elections, and 11 countries around the world have successfully implemented a 16-year-old voting age for national or local elections. The growing acceptance of this idea speaks to its potential to boost voter turnout and civic participation among young people.

Mussab Ali, Director of Vote16USA, expressed his appreciation for Governor Murphy’s support, saying,
“Allowing 16-year-olds to vote in local elections is the next big thing in our democracy. We are fortunate to have champions like Gov. Murphy and State Senator Brian Stack, as well as the City of Newark, among our allies in New Jersey.”

Vote16USA continues to work tirelessly alongside young activists and advocates across the nation to promote the expansion of voting rights to 16-year-olds on the local and state levels. We believe that empowering young voices is essential for a thriving democracy, and we are grateful for leaders like Governor Murphy who share in our vision. Our work in New Jersey was accelerated by the work of local students Anjali Krishnamurti and Yenjay Hu — the co-founders of VOTE16NJ.

Tomorrow, January 10th, Vote16USA is anticipating another major breakthrough in Newark, NJ with the city council slated to vote in favor of allowing 16 and 17-year-olds the right to vote in local school board elections.
