Wainstein:  “Sacco’s silence on ICE Contract is deafening”  

As community leaders stand up against ICE Contract, Sacco remains in hiding    

North Bergen, N.J. – Businessman and community leader Larry Wainstein called on  

North Bergen Mayor and State Senator Nick Sacco to support calls to terminate      Hudson County’s contract with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement to house immigration detainees in the county jail.  The $19 million contract runs for the longest duration allowed under law.  Wainstein noted opposition by surrounding community leaders, while Sacco remains silent on the issue.     

“Senator Menendez, the Jersey City Mayor and City Council, and the Hoboken Mayor and City Council have all voiced their opposition for this contract,” Wainstein said, “Yet, Sacco remains silent. This is not shocking at all.  Sacco has spent over 30 years exploiting women and minorities.”  

Sacco’s sordid history includes leaving threatening voicemails for a female employee who refused his sexual advances and lawsuits filed against him by the NAACP for anti-minority hiring practices. Now he refuses to oppose a contract that supports the separation of children from their parents as families seek political asylum.   

“The laws of the United States and International laws grant political asylum to those seeking a better path for their lives. This contract assists the Trump Administration in its policy of tearing children from the arms of their parents,” Wainstein continued, “Sacco should be the first person in line to oppose this contract, not hiding in silence behind his stooge Vainieri.”  

“My family found a better pathway because of the promise of America.  Hudson County was built by immigrants who came here and achieved their dreams. Sacco is the Mayor of North Bergen and the State Senator for an overwhelmingly Hispanic population.  He must call on the county to terminate this contract immediately,” Wainstein concluded.
