Warren County Young Democrats Condemn New Jersey Senator Doherty’s Shameful Hate Speech
During 9/11 Day of Tribute

PHILLIPSBURG- The following is an official release from the Warren County Young Democrats regarding New Jersey Senator Doherty’s denial of racism in our nation.

The Warren County Young Democrats has unequivocal support for the dedicated police officers and first
responders that risk their lives every day to protect our communities, and save as many lives as they
can. Folks in Warren County may disagree from time to time on policy and politics, but all of our
communities stay united behind those serving honorably and justly for all that call themselves
Americans underneath the same stars and stripes that fly freely.

However, on September 11, 2020 our state Senator Michael Doherty, representing district 23, in a
speech he delivered in Hunterdon County, slapped in the face each and every of his constituents of color
by using his podium to deny the ever present influence of systematic racism that has been plaguing low
income and communities of color for generations.

As a day of mourning for the 3,000 souls lost 19 years ago on American soil through a heinous terrorist
attack, for our Senator to use this moment to call systematic racism an “evil lie” out of political partisan
motivation is simply inappropriate and insensitive. “Racism did not end with the election of President
Barack Obama, to believe otherwise is simply wrong”, said Warren County President Lee Clark. “Even
being 19 years ago, our hearts still ache, and we must work within our communities to foster love
between our brave officers who serve honorably, and our communities that continue to feel a
disconnect and uneasiness”.

“It was inappropriate for a state senator to make such remarks on a day of remembrance”, said Warren
County Vice President Christopher Bauknight. “His actions were unacceptable on a day where so many
Americans lost their lives”.
