Weinberg Seeks Special Legislative Committee on Sexual Misconduct

Legislative Panel Would Conduct Inquiry Into Laws, Practices & Procedures In Cases of Assault, Abuse and Harassment

TRENTON – Senate Majority Leader Loretta Weinberg said that she will seek the formation of a special legislative committee to conduct an inquiry into the ways allegations of sexual assault, abuse and harassment are handled by law enforcement, the criminal justice system and government.

“There is no doubt that the system failed Ms. Brennan, and that the failures occurred at every level,” said Senator Weinberg. “After surviving a terrifying sexual assault, it took incredible courage and determination for her to fight to have her voice heard in the pursuit of justice. It is painfully obvious that her complaints fell on deaf ears both in the criminal justice system and at the highest levels of government. Clearly, reforms are needed so that no more survivors are forced to endure what Ms. Brennan has experienced.”

Senator Weinberg wants the committee to examine the practices and procedures of police officers, prosecutors, the courts and defense attorneys, and she would like to hear from survivors and the advocates who assist them. The review would include hiring practices and background checks for public sector employment, Senator Weinberg said.

“The changes we recommend could include stronger laws with more clarity, special training for police officers and court officials, and additional safeguards that ensure the proper treatment of the survivors,” said Senator Weinberg. “The system must work in ways that treat survivors with respect and dignity.”

Senator Weinberg said that she will ask legislative leaders for the authorization to form the special committee and to determine the panel’s structure and operations.

“We need a top-to-bottom examination of the system to identify the flaws and failures that need reform,” said Senator Weinberg. “I am pleased that the Governor has now asked for an investigation, but the Legislature has a responsibility to act and an important independent role to play.”
