Willingboro Township Introduces New Traffic Safety Unit to Enhance Traffic Management

Willingboro, NJ –- Willingboro Township Police Department announces the debut of a Traffic Safety Unit, effective Monday, July 1, 2024. Created in response to increasing challenges posed by traffic related accidents, this unit is designed to improve road safety and reduce traffic violations.

The unit will include five sworn team members, one sergeant and four officers. They will also be assisted by over 40 traffic guards (non-sworn). Responsibilities will include ensuring safe and efficient traffic patterns, handling motor vehicle accidents and enforcing basic traffic laws. In addition, the unit will be responsible for overseeing citizen education programs.

“The establishment of a dedicated traffic unit is a proactive and strategic approach to address the growing challenges of traffic management and safety within our community,” said Captain Ian Bucs, who serves as the Township’s Acting Public Safety Director. Bucs presented the proposal of the new unit to the Township Council in early May, citing the unit’s objectives to enhance road safety, increase community engagement and optimize traffic flow.

“This unit demonstrates our commitment to creating a safer environment for our residents and visitors to our community,” said Kaya T. McIntosh, the Township’s Mayor. “The traffic safety unit aligns with our strategic plan to provide safety and wellness for all and will serve as an asset to our police department and our community as a whole.”

“I am appreciative of the council’s support of this effort and am excited to get things started and move forward,” Bucs said. “I believe this unit is a proactive and collaborative approach essential to achieving our traffic safety goals as a Township,” Bucs said.

“The establishment of a dedicated traffic unit is a significant step towards ensuring our community’s safety and well-being by proactively addressing traffic concerns,” said Dwayne M. Harris, the Township Manager. “It’s a commendable move by our police department that will undoubtedly lead to safer streets and a strong sense of security in our town.”
