Wimberly on Budget Hearing Testimony

Wimberly on Budget Hearing Testimony

(TRENTON) – Assemblyman Benjie Wimberly (D-Bergen, Passaic), a member of the Assembly Budget Committee, issued the following statement on today’s testimony:

“As we begin the discussion on the state budget, it is very clear the financial and community impact of COVID-19 has made this fiscal year unlike any other in the past.

“The pandemic not only brought to the forefront, but also exacerbated many concerns in our communities including mental health and food insecurity. Some residents never imagined being food insecure yet are now without food.  Another issue is childcare. As we continue to reopen and as school begins, childcare is a major issue for New Jersey parents.  Being a former classroom teacher, I understand the concerns parents face when it comes to finding safe childcare for their children. Nobody should be ‘work paralyzed’ because they have to take care of their child. This is exactly what has happened to families during this pandemic.

“It is essential for us to focus on the needs of residents at this time while looking toward the next few fiscal years. I look forward to receiving testimony from the remaining departments.”
