Assemblyman Benjie E. Wimberly’s Statement on the Significance of International Women’s Day
International Women’s Day commemorates the relentless efforts and remarkable achievements of women throughout history in shaping a world that is more equitable, inclusive, and just. Since I was young, women like my grandmother, mother, wife, nieces, colleagues and friends alike have been instrumental in my life. I hope my salute for them echoes not just today, but throughout the year because they are exceptional.
From trailblazers like Sojourner Truth, who fought for women’s rights and the abolition of slavery, to the modern-day activists breaking barriers, women have left an indelible mark. Dr. Ellen Ochoa became the first Hispanic woman to visit space, and young Olympic gold medalists like Simone Biles demonstrate excellence in athletics and strength in the importance of prioritizing mental health. Women’s history transcends every aspect of American life, and I am continuously inspired by the social, global and economic progress.
The significance of International Women’s Day extends beyond mere recognition of past accomplishments; it serves as a powerful call to action. The 2024 theme “Inspire Inclusion” underscores the collective vision for a future where bias, stereotypes, and discrimination are eradicated. It envisions a world where diversity is embraced, equity is prioritized, and inclusion simply is.
Women’s contributions to society are vast and multifaceted. They have driven innovation, fostered social change, and championed justice. From advancing healthcare and education to leading movements for civil rights and environmental sustainability, women have always made an impact even when our society did not celebrate their existence. Women’s resilience, creativity, and leadership have propelled progress and enriched our collective experience.
The enduring legacy of women is a testament to their courage and resilience in the face of adversity. Today, International Women’s Day is an annual reminder of the immense potential that lies within each and every woman and all should be celebrated. As we honor the past, we also look to the future with hope and determination, knowing that together, we can forge a more inclusive and equitable world for generations to come. |
