Wirths proposes background checks during illegal immigrant driver’s license debate
Citing safety and security concerns, Assemblyman Hal Wirths proposed an amendment to the illegal immigrant driver’s license bill (A4743) that would require all applicants to undergo a wanted person check to determine whether they had an outstanding arrest warrant or pending charges.

“This way we know we are not issuing a government document that can be used as ID without at least doing the most minimal background check to ensure we are not giving it to somebody that could be involved in human trafficking or any type of other crime or warrants from other states. This is strictly for the entire population so there’s not even a hint of discrimination in any way.”

Under Wirths’ amendment, every driver’s license applicant, regardless of status, would have been checked through the New Jersey Wanted Person and Criminal Justice Information systems in the files of the National Crime Information Center.

The Democrats voted against his amendment and the bill passed the committee with all Republicans voting no.
