5th Annual Great Swamp Native Plant Program Opens April 1

Online sale offers 37 different plant species

MORRISTOWN, NEW JERSEY — Great Swamp Watershed Association (GSWA) announced that their fifth annual online Native “Plant for Pollinators” program opens Tuesday, April 1, 2025, at 12:00 noon. The public is encouraged to browse and purchase the large variety of native plants available through April 18, 5:00 PM at GreatSwamp.org. Plant pickup takes place on May 3 at one of 17 local locations. Plants will be available as individual species in 5-plug (young plants) units or as 25-plug garden kits.

"The Plant for Pollinators program goes beyond cultivating beautiful gardens—it’s about restoring life to our ecosystems,” said Hazel England, GSWA Director of Education, Outreach, and Land Stewardship. “By planting native species, you’re creating essential habitats for pollinators and birds, strengthening the web of life that sustains our local environment,"

The online catalogue offers 37 individual species, many of which are deer resistant, and 6 redesigned, money-and-effort-saving kits. Each kit contains 25 plugs comprised of 5 different species. These plant species were selected by GSWA to provide blossoms from spring through fall, year over year, and are grouped by a range of garden conditions. Available kits: Dry Shade, Dry Sun, Moist Shade, Moist Sun, Powerhouse, and Rain Garden.

The organization launched the Native “Plant for Pollinators” Program in January offering four free monthly Zoom webinars focused on native plants and the essential role pollinators play in the ecosystem. Through the webinar series, participants learned about practical gardening, the importance of biodiversity, and the intricate relationships wild bees have with native flowering plants and other insect.

The final webinar, Plant for Pollinators Plant Sale Overview, takes place March 31, 7:00-8:00 PM. It offers an in-depth look at the catalogue of available plants and an overview of their website resources, online storefront, and ordering process.

Registering for all the full series at GreatSwamp.org provides a link to the final webinar as well as access to playback links for all the previous webinars.

“Together, we can transform our backyards into what acclaimed entomologist, Doug Tallamy, envisions as a “Homegrown National Park™”— one garden at a time,” shared England,

The Native “Plant for Pollinators” Program is hosted by Great Swamp Watershed Association and 27 municipal and non-profit Native Plant Program Community Partners. GSWA expresses their deep appreciation to these partners who help promote the program to their communities, provide volunteers, and host pickup sites for their local towns.
