Catherine Healy Joins the McGreevey Slate for Jersey City
Mayoral candidate Jim McGreevey proudly welcomes Catherine Healy to his slate as the candidate for Ward D Councilwoman. A lifelong resident of Jersey City, Healy is a respected attorney, public servant, and advocate for working families. She brings over 15 years of experience in criminal law, labor relations, and oversight of social services.
Public service runs deep in Healy’s family. Her father, Jeremiah Healy, served as Mayor of Jersey City for nine years, from 2004 to 2013. Catherine now continues that legacy of service and leadership.
Healy holds a Juris Doctor from Seton Hall University School of Law and a Bachelor of Arts from Catawba College. She earned a Certificate in Professional Mediation from Cornell University and currently serves as Vice President of the New Jersey Association of Welfare Attorneys.
Healy is the Deputy Director of the Hudson County Department of Family Services and Reintegration, where she works closely with department heads, labor unions, and legal counsel to support over 700 employees and facilitate the smooth delivery of critical public services. As Chief Counsel and In-House Labor & Employment Counsel, she leads internal investigations, enforces disciplinary actions, resolves grievances, and ensures compliance.
Healy oversees the Child Support and Paternity Program, supervises attorneys handling Superior Court matters, and represents the department in state administrative hearings and appeals.
Healy stated, “I’ve spent my career standing up for working families, fighting for fairness, and making sure government works for the people it’s supposed to serve. Jersey City shaped who I am—from growing up in the Heights to raising my own children here—and I’m running for City Council to give back to the community that has given me so much. We need leadership that listens, leads with integrity, and delivers real results for Ward D.”
Healy began her legal career as a law clerk to the Honorable Kevin Callahan, J.S.C., and served as an Assistant Prosecutor in the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office. There, she prosecuted a range of criminal cases, including narcotics, fraud, and attempted murder, and completed multiple jury trials.
County Executive Craig Guy stated, “Catherine is a hard-working, dedicated professional who puts the people of Jersey City and Hudson County first. Her legal expertise helps our most vulnerable residents receive critically needed support."
In 2017, Healy founded Healy Law Office, a pro bono criminal defense practice for residents who do not qualify for a public defender but cannot afford legal counsel. This underscores her long-standing commitment to access and equity in the justice system.
“Mayor Healy and the Healy family represent the ‘gold standard’ in public service for Jersey City. Catherine Healy’s experience in labor law, social services, and public safety makes her a critical force for good,” said McGreevey. “Catherine and her family’s commitment to fairness, working families, and fiscal responsibility is precisely the kind of leadership we need on the City Council.”
Outside her legal work, Healy is a devoted mother of three, an active parishioner at St. Nicholas Church, and a longtime Democratic campaign volunteer. She supports youth athletics, the arts, and local Catholic schools and has been recognized as a 2019 Jersey City Woman of Action and the 2025 Jersey City Irishwoman of the Year.
