Mikie Sherrill Slams Elon Musk on Amtrak Privatization 
BLOOMFIELD — Mikie Sherrill released the following statement today after unelected billionaire Elon Musk proposed that the federal government privatize Amtrak:

“Seemingly not content with firing thousands of veterans or working to cut Medicaid health coverage for kids and seniors, Elon Musk is now proposing the idea of privatizing Amtrak — yet another raw deal that will raise costs for New Jersey. NJ TRANSIT already has to fight for its share of Amtrak resources toward maintenance and repairs on the Northeast Corridor tracks that it rents from Amtrak. If Amtrak were privatized, reduced federal support and a focus on profits would put NJ TRANSIT on the hook for even more of those costs, forcing them to increase fares or cut service — making the commute even more expensive and less reliable for New Jerseyans. It would also mean less oversight and accountability when Amtrak’s decisions harm our commuters.

“Put simply, Musk’s proposal would be a nightmare scenario for NJ TRANSIT and the Northeast Corridor — robbing our commuters to benefit billionaires like himself. So let me be clear: Musk will have a fight on his hands if he comes for our transit system.”
