Prieto Concedes; Backs Coughlin to Succeed Him as Speaker

Speaker Vincent Prieto (D-32) just conceded the speakership.

Statement:

“Serving as the Speaker of the New Jersey General Assembly for the last four years has been the greatest honor of my professional life, and I am so proud of what we accomplished over that time. We reached a historic agreement to replenish the Transportation Trust Fund, worked to expand the middle class and support the most vulnerable in our state and re-established the Assembly as a co-equal branch of our state government, which was my stated intention from the beginning. Now as we enter a new era with the Christie administration coming to an end and Phil Murphy soon to become our next Governor, it is vital that the Democratic Party comes together to pass progressive legislation that will provide the help our working families so desperately need, from increased education funding and property tax relief, to expanded anti-poverty programs, a higher minimum wage and so much more.

“With that in mind, today I am announcing that I will no longer be seeking a new term as Speaker and that myself and the rest of the Democratic caucus will support our colleague Craig Coughlin. New Jersey faces many difficult problems, and it is time now to put the future of the state ahead of all other considerations. I would like to thank the members of the General Assembly for their support over the years, particularly the members in Hudson, Bergen, Passaic, Essex, Mercer and elsewhere who stood by me during a difficult time, as well as my staff for their hard work. I look forward to working with Assemblyman Coughlin to ensure a smooth transition.”
