Pro-Choice Advocates Rally in Montclair Ahead of Midterm Election

MONTCLAIR – Alert to the coming November 8th election and the implications of a Supreme Court reversal of Roe v. Wade, pro-choice advocates this morning rallied here in front of City Hall. Sponsored by Blue Wave NJ, the “March to ROEvember” for women’s reproductive rights  featured a coalition of more than 35 organizations including the People’s Organization For Progress.

“This girl from Newark had a short ride up Bloomfield Avenue but I wouldn’t have missed this for the world,” said state Senator M. Teresa Ruiz (D-29).

She told the large assembled crowd about an exchange she had with her six-year old daughter.

“When it was her birthday… she said, ‘my day, my choice,'” Ruiz said.

She acknowledged the decision earlier this year by the U.S. Supreme Court denying a federal right to an abortion.  “That child has less rights than my 85-year-old grandmother,” the senator said.

Amid cheers from the crowd, the veteran lawmaker added, “I’m not on the ballot but my body is on the ballot and the message is clear. ‘Hands off. Stay out off my uterus.’ My body; my choice. Hands off of our bodies.”

New Jersey Democratic State Party Chairman LeRoy Jones (pictured, above) took advantage of the crowd’s presence in Montclair to plug the candidacy of incumbent U.S. Rep. Mikie Sherrill (D-11), who serves the town in Congress.

“Reelect Mikie Sherrill,” Jones exhorted.

Political activist Priscilla Garces contextualized the event in terms of the history of women’s fight for their rights, noting the critical battle on the ballot this November.

Montclair Mayor Sean Spiller welcomed the crowd, chock full of insiders and political star power.

“Between now and November I know all of you will vote, but we need to talk to everyone we know,” the mayor said. “We need to send people back to congress to make sure [choice regarding abortion] it’s legal in every state in the land.

“This is just the beginning of the work that needs to be done,” Spiller added.

  1. Women have the right to say no to sex, and to take anticonceptives if the do not want to conceive, once the baby was conceived is a separate person that has the right to live and grow.

  2. How sad, abortion is not outlawed, it’s a decision made by the states which the Supreme Court CORRECTLY decided. They shouldn’t worry, New Jersey’s legislature is radically pro-abortion so INNOCENT life will sadly continue to be slaughtered! I wonder if these pro-abortion advocates thought about all of the little girls that have been aborted?!

  3. The government should make sure men from 15 and on get a vasectomy reversed only when they’re financially responsible. You don’t like it then too damn bad.

  4. Henry, There are 2 reasons women sometimes have to choose to end pregnancies:
    #1 None of your business
    and
    #2 None of your business
Keep your hands off MY uterus.

  5. With all the talk they don’t want to say what is really going on which is the destruction of human life. We live in “1984 “ times where new speak and new think lives

  6. Interesting that the women here want men to have vasectomies if they’re not responsible enough and reversed only when financially responsible. Women also have the responsibility to say “No” and close their legs. Why is it always the man’s responsibility??? According to these women, men are no good for anything, except financial support. Maybe taking custody away from women who don’t know how to close their legs is also a solution to this problem!!!!

  7. According to the recent October 4th Gallup Poll, the top 5 issues for voters are the economy, inflation, crime, parents rights to stop their children being indoctrinated in schools, and the illegal alien invasion at the border. Abortion wasn’t even in the Top 10 of issues that voters care about. In fact, the Gallup Poll said that ONLY 4% of voters think abortion is one of the top issues. Democrats need to be answering to their constituents about the Top 5 issues that Democrats caused to implode.

  8. So another Democratic rally in an attempt to turn people’s attention away from the woeful job Biden, Pelosi, et al are doing. The angry mob continues to harp on “choice” as the only issue. Who makes the choice for the infant who is viable outside the womb at 23-24 week? The Democrats never address that, or why they want abortion up to birth. Is there no reasonable compromise? Is infant viability an inconvenient truth.?

  9. Of course you would bring up Biden and Pelosi. That’s all Republicans do. Not your choice. Men just love to tell women what to do with their bodies. Fuck off!
