Raritan Twp. Mayor Kuhl on Reiner: ‘Appropriate Action will be Taken’
In an ominous missive made amid renewed calls for his local fellow elected official to resign, Raritan Twp. Mayor Jeff Kuhl promised to mete out “appropriate action” in the case of Deputy Mayor Louis Reiner.
After receiving a chastising blow by U.S. Rep. Tom Malinowski (D-7), Reiner apologized for hateful comments he made on Facebook about Islam.
It won’t be enough, according to the mayor.
In a statement, Kuhl said the following:
“As your elected officials, we want to assure you that we do not support, agree with, or in any way condone the statements made by Mr. Reiner regarding Muslims and the Islamic faith. We found his remarks to be reprehensible, offensive and deeply disturbing.
“Mr. Reiner’s assumption that his fellow Republican committee members agree with him is extremely misguided and completely unfounded. We had no knowledge of his plans to post his thoughts on Facebook and we were not consulted by Mr. Reiner prior to any statements he made to reporters.
Appropriate action will be taken by the committee.
“When we took our oaths of office, we promised to ‘faithfully, impartially and justly’ serve the Township, and we will continue to do so,” Kuhl added.
The mayor is the son of former Hunterdon County GOP Chairman Henry Kuhl, who served as chair of the party for 35 years before retiring in 2014. Kuhl was succeeded by sitting Chairman Pat Torpey.
