Report: Menendez Considering an Independent Run for U.S. Senate
Indicted Sen. Bob Menendez, D-N.J., is considering running for re-election in November as an independent, two sources who spoke with him directly tell NBC News.
Menendez, who along with his wife, Nadine Menendez, is facing 18 federal counts and is charged with taking bribes, has not yet publicly said if he would run again this year; his term is up in January.
Propping up their own indicted candidate for President, the NJGOP expressed outrage in an email:
“Talk about a power obsession… Corrupt Democrat Senator Bob Menendez may launch an Independent bid for re-election, despite facing 18 FEDERAL COUNTS. It feels just yesterday when he was caught with almost $500,000 IN BRIBE CASH and 13 GOLD BARS stuffed in his jacket pockets.”
End Citizens United // Let America Vote (ECU // LAV) President Tiffany Muller issued the following statement on reports that disgraced Senator Bob Menendez is considering a run as an independent for the New Jersey Senate race:
“The only thing less popular in New Jersey than Senator Menendez are the Governor’s new toll hikes. But while Senator Menendez has no path to win either as a Democrat or an independent, there is a real chance he could play spoiler in November if Democrats nominate a weak candidate. With the Senate majority at stake, we cannot take chances on untested and unproven candidates.
“Congressman Andy Kim won tough races in a tough district and his people-powered campaign is appealing most to both Democrats and independent voters—and he can win no matter who’s on the ballot in November. New Jerseyans are sick of corrupt machine politics and ready for new leaders who will put their voices ahead of the special interests.”
