Rumble in the Rose City: Sherrill and DeGroot Campaign Amid ‘Lies’ and Anger

MADISON – There’s no better opportunity for politics than the borough’s annual Bottle Hill celebration on a beautiful Saturday three weeks before Election Day.

People running for Congress know that.

Mikie Sherrill was first to arrive – shortly after 2 p.m. – to the Democrats’ booth on the east side of Waverly Place.

Republican Paul DeGroot made it to the GOP’s booth – directly across the street – about 20 minutes later.

So the two candidates in CD-11 – incumbent Sherrill and challenger DeGroot were about 100 feet apart.

They didn’t meet. What a pity.

But DeGroot certainly had Sherrill in mind.

As he strolled up the street chatting with people, he asked a group of women if they had seen any of Sherrill’s commercials. (They are rather ubiquitous).

The women nodded, prompting DeGroot to give his assessment.

“They’re lies,” he said.

DeGroot has been particularly irked by Sherrill’s claim that he opposes abortion and wants a national ban.

He says he is “pro-choice,” but that the issue belongs to the states. As such, he would not support a national abortion ban, nor would he back a congressional bill to codify the protections of Roe v. Wade.

Sherrill’s arrival, as befits an incumbent who is very popular with her supporters, was quite festive.

A crowd of admirers surrounded her and before long, the congresswoman was posing for pictures. One man said she should run for president.

She noted that the election is just 24 days away, suggesting that we have entered the home stretch.

Later, the congresswoman was asked if she thought Democrats were “excited” about the midterms. Passion can be key, given the fact turnout in the midterms is not always great.

Sherrill said she thought so, but lamented that it took a court decision stripping women of a right they had for 50 years to do so. She added that the election is also about the extremism of many Republicans, which she said has not abated with Donald Trump’s departure. To that point, she said the Republicans have not shown an ability to govern.

Back at the Dems’ booth, which included a sign about voting in “ROEvember,” I asked a woman if she thought Democrats were excited.

“I’m f…. pissed,” she replied.

Anger certainly can bring people to the polls and Democrats are counting on women upset with the Dobbs decision to do just that.

Republicans have a different take.

And it was one DeGroot clearly enunciated in talking to one voter.

“It’s the economy, it’s always the economy,” he said.

The obvious moral here is that voters can be angry about different things.

  1. Sherrill is awful. She has a tendency to lie about her opponents. She voted for infanticide and voted to impeach Trump twice for a nothing burger phone call and when Trump was already out of office.

  2. Sherrill and the Democrats are totally tone deaf. They are banking their election on abortion. Abortion isn’t even on the voters’ radars. In fact, the first 5 issues of concern for voters is economy, inflation, crime, parents rights against school boards, stopping the border invasion. Almost every poll and list shows that abortion isn’t even ranked in the Top 10 of voters’ concerns.

  3. Sherrill is somebody who served our country and whom I would like to like……..but I find it hard to. I am an independent and have no party affiliation. I wrote a letter to representative Sherrill during the President’s first impeachment based on some things she said that were clearly inaccurate. I got form letter type response answering none of my questions. Representative Sherrill is a partisan politician who tows the party line and labels all republicans with the same rubber stamp. We need somebody who is willing to listen, think independently, compromise and work with people they may not agree with. Her presence in congress just perpetuates the problem.

  4. Sherrill voted 100% with Nancy Pelosi and the Radical Leftist Democrats!!!!! That was 100% of the votes against the American people. Enough said. Mikie Sherrill is a Manchurian Candidate who has accepted campaign donations from the Red Chinese, and other foreign entities, either directly or through proxies.
