Sheriff Cureton Confirms Two Additional Positive COVID-19 Cases Among Bergen Jail Population
Bergen County Sheriff Anthony Cureton confirms that two more individuals in the general population of the Bergen County Jail have tested positive for COVID-19. The two cases include a 40-year-old Salvadoran national in U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement custody and a 54-year-old county inmate.
Cureton announced the first COVID-19 case in the jail on March 24th.
The 40-year-old detainee was sent for medical evaluation after displaying symptoms on Thursday, March 26th. The test was declared positive on Friday evening. The individual has since returned to the Bergen County Jail under quarantine in the COVID-19 isolation unit and is receiving medical care.
The 54-year-old county inmate received a medical evaluation on Saturday, March 28th with results coming back positive on Sunday. The county inmate is still in the care of a local hospital.
This brings the total number of confirmed cases for COVID-19 among the general population in the Bergen County Jail to three since the outbreak of the global pandemic. The first positive case, a 31-year-old ICE detainee, was released on Thursday, March 26th by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
At the current time, these two individuals are the only positive cases of COVID-19 among the general population in the Bergen County Jail but medical staff are continually monitoring all inmates and ICE detainees in the facility. It is the policy of the Bergen County Jail to send any inmate or ICE detainee for further medical evaluation if they display symptoms related to the virus.
