Sherrill on Military Strike: ‘What’s the Plan?’

In the aftermath of two mass shootings this weekend in Texas and Ohio, U.S. Rep. Mikie Sherrill renewed her call for Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell to bring common sense gun safety legislation passed in the House up for a floor vote.

MORRISTOWN – Mikie Sherrill’s question is what happens next.

The congresswoman and Navy veteran from the 11th District talked about the killing of Iranian military leader Qasem Soleimani after attending Friday night’s reorganization meeting of the Morris County freeholders.

She agreed that Soleimani was a “bad individual” responsible for killing Americans, but asked, “What is the plan, what is the strategy to insure that this does not escalate?” That, she said, is a very bipartisan concern.

Sherrill spoke of the 1991 Gulf War and the U.S. invasion of Iraq in 2003.

She said one key difference is that in 1991, the then-administration of George H.W. Bush worked had to bring the “power of our allies to bear with a clean, a clear strategy.”

The congresswoman said that wasn’t the case in the run-up to the 2003 Iraq invasion and that she fears it’s not the case today either. And that raises pertinent questions about how escalating hostilities with Iran is going to end.

Sherrill also said it’s concerning that the military strike was taken without the administration informing Congress.
