Sherrill Post-Game

The race in CD-11 is over, or is it?

Laura Ali, the chair of the Morris County Republican Committee, fired off a statement soon after midnight saying it is “irresponsible” to call a race when many votes have not been tabulated.

Mikie Sherrill, the Democratic incumbent, seems to disagree.

Sherrill claimed victory Tuesday night and followed up this morning on a call with reporters.

She said the preliminary returns showed that, “I was performing at a rate that makes me confident.”

As of mid-morning, Sherrill led Republican Rosemary Becchi by about 41,000 votes with 55 percent of the vote counted. Sherrill led in Morris, the largest county in the four-county district, by about 13,000 votes.

Ali contended that “this last week has shown a dramatic uptick in Republican voter turnout throughout Morris County where Republicans have significantly out-performed Democrats.” She added that Becchi is a “skilled and talented” candidate who is “deserving of a fair and just election where every vote is counted.”

With this sentiment in the Republican camp, it probably was no surprise that Sherrill said she did not receive a congratulatory call from Becchi Tuesday night.

Looking beyond the confines of the 11th District, Sherrill said a highlight of the night was how well the New Jersey delegation performed.

All 10 Democratic House incumbents have won, or are leading, their elections.

Of course in CD-2, Democrat-turned-Republican Jeff Van Drew has a slight lead over Democrat Amy Kennedy.

Asked about that race, Sherrill said she doesn’t profess to understand south Jersey politics.
