Sires Personally Pounding on Doors in his Home City of West New York
He’s motivated, but not because he fears Republican challenger John Muniz in this overwhelmingly Democratic county.
Less than a week ahead of Election Day, U.S. Rep. Albio Sires (D-8) is engaged in his home town of West New York, personally pounding doors and attempting to roust the vote to repel a county committee insurrection led by Union City Mayor Brian P. Stack, who’s allied with Mayor Felix Roque.
“As hard as Albio worked for Felix four years ago, he’s working as hard against him now,” a source told InsiderNJ.
Aligned with Hudson County Democratic Organization (HCDO) candidate Amy DeGise, and with the 2020 security of his congressional seat hanging in the balance, Sires wants to preserve those 60-odd Line A allies on the county committee against an aggressive June 5th counter punch by Stack and Roque.
DeGise’s allies acknowledge the well-organized and relentless push by Stack in West New York, a city that used to be in his district, prior to 2011 redistricting, which shifted him into Jersey City and cited WNY within state Senator Nick Sacco’s neighboring 32nd.
“If Albio can come out of West New York with three quarters of the seats, that’s a big win for him [and for DeGise],” the source told InsiderNJ.
But the Stack-Roque allies are confident.
Championing county committee candidates running off the line against a team topped by Sires and U.S. Senator Bob Menendez (D-NJ), the mayor has scheduled a June 20th fundraiser and is telling ground troops that they are going to win on Tuesday.
