The Somerset County Democratic Committee tonight cancelled its scheduled convention out of an abundance of caution regarding the coronavirus, but the organization does appear to have in position a slate intent on challenging Republican incumbents.
The screening committee has recommended Paul Drake, former Township Committeeman in Hillsborough, Doug Singleterry, Councilman from North Plainfield for Freeholder and Tina Jalloh, Esq from Franklin for Surrogate.
When the organization reschedules, the trio look to be in good position to have party support in the battleground county that tiled toward Democrats in the era of President Donald J. Trump.
Singleterry and Drake hope to run in the 2020 general election against incumbent Republican Freeholders Brian Gallagher and Brian Levine.
Levine and Gallagher are the last two Republican freeholders in Somerset County.
Last year, Melonie Marano of Green Brook Twp. defeated incumbent GOP Freeholder Pat Walsh to give Democrats their first countywide freeholder majority since the administration of President Lyndon Johnson.
A veteran local councilman in North Plainfield, attorney Singleterry (pictured, above) has run countywide before, and was a late step-in for his party in 2016 when another candidate imploded.
