Update: Mangold this afternoon announced he won’t run for the CD11 seat.

Former Jets center Nick Mangold of Chatham, a Republican, is considering taking a snap from CD11.

Released by the Jets last year, the 34-year old Mangold fulfilled one of the longest-serving tenures on the football team in recent memory.

Born and raised in Centreville, Ohio, the 6 ft. 4 Mangold donned green under center for 11 years.

According to the New York Post, “In his prime, Mangold was the best center in the NFL. He made seven Pro Bowls and was twice All-Pro. He started in 164 of 176 games during his 11 years with the Jets and helped guide young quarterbacks like Mark Sanchez and Geno Smith.”

Mangold’s name entered the huddle this morning as others – Assemblyman Tony Bucco (R-25), Sussex Freeholder Sylvia Petillo, Morristown Freeholder Tom Mastrangelo, former Harding Mayor Nic Platt, businessman Jerry Langer, Gov. Chris Todd Whitman’s daughter Kate Whitman Annis, and others – hovered in the vicinity of the seat being left behind by U.S. Rep. Rodney Frelinghuysen (R-11).

Only Assemblyman Jay Webber (R-26) is an all-in declared candidate for the GOP at this time.

If Mangold were to run, he wouldn’t be the first former pro football player living in New Jersey to make the transition from the gridiron to a congressional run.

Former Eagles offensive lineman Jon Runyan, also a Republican, defeated Democratic incumbent U.S.

Rep. John Adler in 2010 and served for two terms before deciding not to run for reelection in 2014. Bergen Democrats prodded New York Giants Hall of Famer Harry Carson to run against incumbent U.S. Rep. Scott Garrett (R-5) in 2012, and he considered it, but declined.

There was also Phil McConkey, formerly of the Giants, who ran for Congress in 1990. He lost to U.S. Rep. Dick Zimmer (R-12) in the GOP primary in a seat vacated by U.S. Rep. Jim Courter. Zimmer received 37.7% of the vote to McConkey’s 30.8%.
