Source: Raia V. Shotmeyer for Gottheimer’s Seat

Congressman Josh Gottheimer voiced his support of Governor Phil Murphy and Attorney General Gurbir Grewal’s lawsuit against the IRS and US Treasury Department following the the gutted State and Local Tax (SALT) deduction.

A Republican source this afternoon told InsiderNJ that two Republicans have the attention right now of Northern Jersey power players as they size up a candidate best suited to take on U.S. Rep. Josh Gottheimer (R-5) in 2018.

They are Republican State Committee Chairman Sam Raia and Bergen GOP fundraiser Chuck Shotmeyer.

The source said Republicans anticipate a big money contest, hence the intensified scrutiny of Raia and Shotmeyer. Both have the ability to raise money.

When they examine the dimensions of the district itself, the Bergen GOP likes its chances of defeating Gottheimer, a Democrat who last year beat veteran Republican incumbent U.S. Rep. Scott Garrett (R-5).

  1. What’s Raia’s pitch?

“After failing Republicans in New Jersey, I want to take that failure to Washington”

“Arf! Arf! Arf! Chris Christie’s lapdog deserves a seat in Congress”

“Completely devoid of integrity or principle, I am perfectly positioned for the House”

    “Who’s Sam Raia?”
