Source: Sumter has Questions about Recreational Legalization of Marijuana

Assemblywoman Shavonda Sumter (D-35) of Paterson has concerns about bills on the legislature’s plate, according to a source with knowledge of the backroom talks ongoing in Trenton.

Sumter frets about “the gateway drug” factor with regard to pot, the source said, as Speaker Craig Coughlin (D-19) continues to try to corral caucus members in favor of the recreational legalization of marijuana.

The situation was fluid as talks continued Monday and legislators considered the legalization bills in the Assembly Appropriations and Senate Judiciary committees.
