Sources: Somerset Turbulence Expected for Murphy
Democratic sources in Somerset County anticipate Phil Murphy’s toughest task to date on Thursday as the former U.S. ambassador to Germany attempts to harness the line of an organization run by Chair Peg Schaffer.
Somerset has set the scene for several big displays of anti-Trump sentiment, including a pro-immigration rally in Somerville and demonstrations against U.S. Rep. Leonard Lance’s (R-7) affiliation with the new president. The county also furnished a Bernie Sanders-fueled challenge of Lance last year in the person of Peter Jacob.
Now Schaffer is trying to direct her forces in the direction of Murphy, some of whom appear resistant to the banker as that best embodiment of a party seeking to capitalize on fledgling grassroots fervor.
Two sources on Wednesday said they expect Murphy to win at Somerset’s Thursday night convention, but expect a more narrow margin of victory for him over Assemblyman John Wisniewski (D-19), who for years has attended Somerset Democratic events and also served as the Sanders presidential campaign’s state director.
That nexus for Wiz has Murphy fans uneasy.
