Sweeney Calls for Health Care Protections for Laid-Off, Furloughed Workers

In a press conference after Governor Phil Murphy’s 2020 budget speech, Senate President Steve Sweeney said the NJ legislature gave Murphy a good budget and he’s happy the governor signed that budget. Then he criticized the governor.

Senate President Steve Sweeney sent the attached correspondence to Marlene Caride, the Commissioner of the Department of Banking and Insurance, asking for safeguards to preserve health insurance coverage for workers who lose their jobs, are furloughed, or have work hours reduced as a result of the coronavirus crisis. Senator Sweeney wants the Department to allow employers to extend health insurance coverage for their impacted workers so those workers don’t have to secure coverage elsewhere, such as expensive COBRA benefits or individual health plans, without adequate income.
