Sweeney Calls for the Suspension of Cancellation Fees

In another call to the business community, Senate President Steve Sweeney (D-3) urged companies with subscription-based billing today to suspend the fees associated with early termination:

“This is a time of collaboration, compassion, forgiveness and action. Lawmakers are working around the clock with businesses, non-profit organizations and social services so we can all weather this public health crisis in a way that will have the least impact on our communities and our economy.

“As people take the crucial steps of strict social distancing and self-quarantining in order to keep themselves and their loved ones safe and healthy, they are also looking for ways to manage the current fiscal instability. For many, that may mean tightening their belts and canceling certain communication services, cable packages or other monthly memberships and they should not be penalized for taking responsible action to better secure themselves and their family. This will also make it more likely the customers will resume service when they are able.

“I urge the business community, again, to not take a punitive approach to this unprecedented moment. Business is not as usual, but we will get through this together and I am confident that the businesses that center compassion and forgiveness for their employees and their customers are going to fare far better as we emerge from the other side of this crisis.”
