Sweeney Heads North to Bergen while Currie Parties Down South

Insider NJ's Jay Lassiter discusses the specifics of what is going to be in the medical marijuana bill, which was recently separated from a bill that would allow legalization of recreational marijuana in NJ.

When the John Currie-led Democratic State Committee kicks off its conference in Atlantic City on Thursday night, Senate President Steve Sweeney (D-3) will not be part of the processional.

He’ll be up north, making a Bergen appearance, according to an invite to a state Senator Joe Lagana (D-38) fundraiser.

Sweeney’s the co-headliner of Lagana’s event, along with Building Trades boss Rick Sabato.

Currie and Sweeney don’t get along, the residual from the state party chair tapping Phil Murphy over Sweeney for governor. Sweeney seldom appears eager to make a beeline to a Currie event, even when it’s on his own South Jersey turf. This night in question appears to be no exception.

Murphy’s scheduled to be at Currie’s party at Harrah’s Thursday. So are Democratic National Committee Chair Tom Perez and U.S. Sen. Bob Menendez (D-NJ).

But Sweeney will be at the side of Lagana.
