World War II Medal of Honor winner John Basilone of Raritan - one of the great combat heroes of the Pacific Theater - was the godfather of Alfred Gaburo, father of Somerset County Republican Committee chairman Al Gaburo.

Prior to entering the Marine Corps, Basilone worked at Gaburo's Laundry in Raritan.
