ATLANTIC CITY – He’s here. U.S. Rep. Donald Norcross (D-1) just bounded into the big, packed carpeted room.
Trailing buzz, he showed up here at a congressional panel where U.S. Rep. Bill Pascrell (D-9), U.S. Rep. Albio Sires (D-8), and U.S. Rep. Frank Pallone (D-6) were.
“The only electrician in congress,” he told Peg Schaffer, vice chair of the Democratic State Committee.
He comes every year, now officially including 2019, hours before the arrival of Speaker Nancy Pelosi, with the impeachment question hanging over the entire event.
“The number one thing we can do is put Cory Booker in the White House,” said the Camden guy, a short time before Booker arrived.
Sage words awaited the crowd from Pascrell, who apparently no longer harbors statewide aspirations.
“Never be afraid of your age, your gender, or how much money is in your pocket,” Pascrell said. “Those three things tell me nothing about your character.”
Hand claps.
Pascrell went to the microphone with the warpaint on.
“I can’t wait till next year,” he announced to murmurs. “You’d think as you get older, you want less combat.”
Not so.
He relishes it, he said.
This is combat,” Pascrell said. “If you don’t think this combat, you must be watching The Apprentice.”
The line brought down the house.
As the first speaker at this event, Pascrell had the crowd with him.
“Talk about guts, she puts men to shame. You saw her sitting in the White House with carrot head there,” the Paterson congressman added to laughs.
He was talking about Pelosi and President Donald J. Trump.
The oldest member of the New Jersey Conressional delegation threw a bone to all his colleagues.
