Tit for Tat: Sweeney Heads North for Stack Event, Comes Face to Face with Fulop
Senator Brian P. Stack (D-33) went to South Jersey last week with shock and awe visuals on behalf of Senate President Steve Sweeney (D-3), and this morning a mild-mannered, low-drama Sweeney showed up at the Stony Hill Inn with a check for Stack at the latter’s breakfast fundraiser.
Assemblywoman Sheila Oliver (D-34) was in the room, and so was Speaker Vincent Prieto (D-32).
But significantly, Sweeney found himself parked in front of the same microphone as Jersey City Mayor Steven Fulop.
From Stack’s perspective, part of the theatrical balancing act of the event included giving speaking parts on his behalf to both Sweeney and Fulop, two guys who could put their old rivalry aside in order to perform without incident at the light-hearted breakfast.
Fulop and Sweeney, of course, had once both wanted to be the Democratic nominee for governor this year, but a year-long North versus South war sputtered finally when former Ambassador to Germany (and former Goldman Sachs executive) Phil Murphy snatched away the party support he needed to land the nomination.
But just as Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman would always have Paris, Sweeney and Fulop, evidently, will always have Stack.
