Trump’s Plan to End Birthright Citizenship for Immigrant Children Sets off Menendez
U.S. Senator Bob Menendez (D-N.J.), today released the following statement on President Donald J. Trump’s unconstitutional plan to issue an Executive Order to end birthright citizenship for children of immigrants.
“The Fourteenth Amendment to the United States is crystal clear: a child born in the United States is an American citizen. Simply put: to deny citizenship to someone born in the United States is unconstitutional.
“For the party of limited government, this proposal would put the Department of Homeland Security in every delivery room and require the creation of a brand new extensive bureaucracy with burdensome procedures at the expense of American taxpayers. That does not sound like limited government to me.
“Let’s be clear: President Trump is trying to use immigration to scare people and distract them from the issues that affect American families every day like his sabotage of our health care system, and his prioritization of the economic needs of those at the top, instead of building an economy that works for all.
“At the end of the day, our Divider-in-Chief is using fear to turn us against each other ahead of an election, plain and simple. It’s not only unconstitutional, it’s absolutely disgraceful, and voters will remember this when they come out to vote next week.”
