Union City Flashpoint: Stack’s Version of Rocky Doesn’t Include Apollo (Or Frank Hague)
It’s easy to forget that Union City Mayor (and Senator) Brian P. Stack has a municipal election on Tuesday, but he does, and he’s running like he’s up against the ghost of Frank Hague, even if he’s unopposed and his own, most immediate quarry is the decidedly less threatening – but still politically alive – Hudson County Executive Tom DeGise.
Running for the chairmanship of the Hudson County Democratic Organization (HCDO) in June and using the springboard of Tuesday’s election to demonstrate massive local power and ultimately the persuasion to offload DeGise in 2019 if he wants to, Stack today held his Union City Day as a last-minute get out the vote effort.
It was like the scene in the second Rocky Movie where the whole city comes out and runs behind Sylvester Stallone, only at the end of this version, the protagonist doesn’t face Apollo Creed, but instead shadow boxes in the ring in front of thousands of adoring fans.
Six locations throughout the city offered free hot dogs, ice cream, rides, and toys.
About 700 people mobbed each location.
“Unopposed but not underworked,” said a source close to Stack, who two weeks ago attempted a people power sound barrier break in Union City, answered by DeGise assembling a roomful of insiders anchored by Senator Bob Menendez (D-NJ) this past week in Jersey City.
