Who’s Up and Who’s Down: Week of the Failed GOP Quorum in LD38

WHO’S UP

Tim Eustace and Joe Lagana

The 38th District incumbent Democrats had a hard time stifling belly laughs as a hapless Republican Party struggled to find a replacement for Matthew S. Seymour, who last month pulled the plug on his challenge of the Democrats and changed parties. These are the same two guys who two years ago delighted as the LD38 GOP imploded under the weight of this.

Mikie Sherrill

EMILY’s List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, this week endorsed the former Navy helicopter pilot, federal prosecutor and mother of four for the CD11 seat currently occupied by U.S. Rep. Rodney Frelinghuysen (R-11).

Steven Fulop

Running for reelection in November, the Jersey City Mayor Steven Fulop reported raising over $362,000 during the second quarter of 2017, compared to $84K raised by rival Bill Matsikoudis, according to filings with New Jersey Election Law Enforcement Commission. Read the story here.

Wilda Diaz

Trying to spread her wings as she looks to the future, Perth Amboy Mayor Wilda Diaz this week raised $25,000 at a fundraiser at Casa Nova Grill in Newark.

WHO’S DOWN

Paul DiGaetano

Badly drubbed when he ran for the vacant LD40 state senate seat, the Bergen County Republican Organization chairman can’t dredge up a replacement for defector Matt Seymour in the 38th Legislative District. The GOP’s failure this week to muster a quorum to fill the seat left the chairman open to this bruising critique by the Democrats.

Billy Leonard

Trying to land the support of the Republican Party in order to replace Seymour as his party’s nominee in the 38th District, Leonard summoned so much excitement that his backers couldn’t summon a quorum.

Scott Garrett

President Donald J. Trump is apparently reconsidering his nomination of the former 5th District Congressman to lead the Export-Import Bank. For that story, please go here.

Chris Christie

Mired with a 15% job approval rating, the guy can’t catch a break – literally. When he caught a fly ball at a Mets game earlier this week, other people sitting in the stands booed.

  1. Please be more clear about “Emily’s List”! It isn’t simply “the nation’s largest resource for women in politics”, from its own website, their mission is to “elect pro-choice Democratic women to office” .. not all women.
