The letter:
We, the undersigned, hereby publicly endorse Senator Elizabeth Warren for the Democratic nomination for President of the United States in 2020.
We are a collective group of individual members of the New Leaders Council (NLC), recognized as young, progressive leaders from across the country creating change from the ground up in our communities. It should be stated clearly that NLC does not endorse candidates or engage in political activity, and has not authorized this statement. Further our diverse membership across the country is supporting many different candidates in 2020. We do not claim to speak for the organization, or all members, and we encourage others to raise their voices in support of whomever they believe in.
However, we individually felt compelled to come forward today with one voice. After months of conversations with our peers across the country, we believe that Senator Warren best understands the lives of the most marginalized, and all those often left behind in our country.
Together, we represent a diverse group of young leaders shaping change outside traditional power structures. We are leading the way in social, gender, and racial justice, education, civics, philanthropy, business, elected office, and law. Through our shared connection, we are actively changing who participates in and leads our political process all across the country. Our fellow members are people of all cultures, races, faiths, gender identities, sexual orientations, economic circumstances, educational backgrounds, geographies, immigration status, ancestry, family origin, and native language.
For many different reasons, each of us has come to support Sen. Elizabeth Warren for President. Our individual and collective endorsement is not a suggestion that we will always agree with Sen. Warren; we will certainly challenge her when we disagree. Nonetheless, we know Elizabeth Warren listens; she learns, she’s accountable, and she grows. She possesses a unique ability to deconstruct complex issues, communicate what is at stake for each of us, name systemic harm and injustices, and offer deep solutions that will transform policies and shift paradigms.
And, yes, she has a plan for it. Her plans are bold enough and specific enough to transform stale and harmful systems. They are each designed to focus on people who have been pushed aside and exploited throughout this country’s history. And, she has proven experience in leading executive change.
At our core, we hold dear our shared values of justice, equity, democracy, freedom, equality, fairness, compassion, and love. Each of us understands that we are inherently interconnected, as are our communities and our collective fate as a nation.
Because of this, we understand that being the change we seek requires each of us to hold each other’s well-being, dignity and freedom in mind. We believe that Sen. Warren best represents the values and leadership we need to make this country a fair and just one for all, and is the candidate most uniquely capable of governing in a way that honors them. We, therefore, enthusiastically endorse Senator Warren for President.
