Rally to Stop Meadowlands Power Plants, Remember Tragedy at Lac Mégantic

Rally to Stop Meadowlands Power Plants, Remember Tragedy at Lac Mégantic

Residents and environmentalists will hold a rally to oppose the two fracked gas power plants being proposed for the Meadowlands. The plants would risk the health of our local communities and would be among the largest sources of climate destroying greenhouse gases in the region.

The rally will be held on the sixth anniversary of the Lac Mégantic rail explosion in Quebec, when a train carrying Bakken crude oil derailed and exploded in the heart of the town, killing 47 people.

Volatile Bakken crude oil is transported on CSX trains through Bergen, Hudson, and Essex Counties, and beyond. The proposed power plants in North Bergen and Kearny would sit next to the CSX rail line where volatile Bakken crude oil is currently being shipped through dozens of New Jersey communities, posing severe risks of derailment and other safety hazards.
